When Will Landlines Be Phased Out?

What is going to happen to landlines?

With BT stating that they plan to cut off traditional landlines by December 2025, it has left a lot of people wondering what is going to happen to landlines?

Well, old copper networks that are currently in use will be replaced with a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service instead, meaning that our landline calls will be delivered through an internet connection, rather than a wired connection.

Why are landlines being switched over?

According to specialists within the telecommunications industry, they are finding it harder to source equipment for the current landline system, with many suppliers not manufacturing the parts any more, making the process of upkeep and maintenance more challenging and expensive.

Switching to an entirely new system, that relies on the internet, can open the opportunity of new features and benefits for the user.

Can I keep my old number?

Yes, you should have no issue keeping your old number when this switch occurs. If you have any concerns about losing your number, we would advise you to get in touch with your telecom provider to find out more.

Will I need a new phone?

No, you should not need a new phone for any of the changes in 2025. Ofcom has stated that your provider will need to cater to any needs or challenges that you face. Routers and even adapters can be provided to individuals who need them, as well as battery packs for individuals who do not have access to a mobile phone.

Is an internet connection required?

An internet connection is not specifically required when the switch over occurs. If you already have an internet connection, your landline will simply connect to this service and your calls will be hosted through there.

For individuals that do not have an internet connection, your providers have the responsibility to provide you with an internet connection for the sole purpose of maintaining your landline. This service should be free of charge, as long as you do not move providers.

Will the VoIP cost more?

Currently, two major telecom providers have commented on the switch to VoIP in 2025. BT has stated that they will not raise prices above inflation for anyone making the switch from landline to VoIP until 2026 and Virgin Media have promised that customers will not pay more than their current contracts.

If you require any additional services, such as an internet connection, we would advise you to contact your provider today.

What is a VoIP?

VoIP, also known as Voice over Internet Protocol, is a type of phone system that relies on an internet connection to work correctly. An internet connection is needed to make and receive calls, so the need for traditional telephone systems is removed.

Using a VoIP phone system, you are also not tied down to using a physical phone to receive landline calls. You can set up your mobile phone to receive landline calls, so even if you are out, you will never miss a caller.

Will using a VoIP ruin my internet speed?

Overall, hosting a VoIP on your home or business internet connection should not alter your internet speeds. Typically, a VoIP call will use around 100kbps to deliver a high-quality call for the caller and receiver, and even with small broadband packages you should see no issue in giving and receiving calls.

Can you make the switch before 2025?

Yes, you can make the switch before 2025. Many countries around the globe are already switching over to VoIP, with the Netherlands and Estonia already removing their reliance on wired connections in favour over more affordable alternatives.

With the recent surge in pricing of standard goods, The Office of National Statistics reports that four out of ten businesses have also noticed a rise in the price of goods and services.

Making the switch to VoIP can be a great way for businesses of any size to save money, whilst not conceding to a lower quality of service.

Can I use two separate internet connections?

Yes, you or your business can have two separate internet connections if you believe this will help your business continue operating seamlessly. Having a smaller internet connection contract specifically to handle your VoIP and another connection to handle your other internet needs can be a great way to manage internet speeds and bandwidth use.

What if there is a power outage?

Sadly, if there is a power outage, your VoIP telephone system will not be able to make or receive calls.

If you know someone who could be affected by being unable to contact the emergency service when a power cut occurs, we would advise them to contact their landline provider and ensure that they provide a backup power supply, when the big switch happens.
